Hello, Book Nerds! Welcome back to Reading Has Ruined My Life or welcome if you are new. As always, my name is Hannah and I am your captain on this journey into my bookcases.
It’s Spooky Season, Book Nerds!! The best time of the year is here!
Oh I’m so excited! I’ve counted down the days until Spooky Season and it’s finally here! I’m ready for hot apple cider and fluffy blankets. It’s time for cozy fall days and comfort Halloween films. I finally get to stroll through a pumpkin patch and then picnic in a graveyard before ending the night with another cup of hot apple cider and a good horror story.
Speaking of horror stories, what do I plan on reading this Spooky Season? There are so many great reads out there. It’s hard to decide between reading a bunch of books I’ve never read before and reading a bunch of spooky books I’ve already read and enjoyed. There are too many options, but I think I’ve narrowed it down to five reads. Five reads I know for certain I’m going to read this Spooky Season. I will be reading a bunch more, but for now, let’s crack into it.
5. The Last Days of Jack Sparks by Jason Arnopp kicks off this list. You may remember me mentioning this read all the way back in January when I released my list of rereads for the year. I have not reread this title yet. I’ve lowkey been waiting for Spooky Season to dig in to this one, and it’s finally time! I will be under a giant pile of fluffy blankets with a mug of hot apple cider as I enjoy this one.
4. Next up is Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. You all know this one. It needs no introduction. It’s a Gothic Lit classic for a reason. This classic has been long overdue for a reread so it shall kick off Spooky Season.
3. Let’s move onto books I’ve never read before but I’ve been dying to sink my claws in. The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins comes in at number three. The Woman in White is a classic piece of Gothic Lit that I’ve never read. How rude of me. Imma change that this year.
2. In our number two spot we have Weyward by Emilia Hart. It’s got haunted house vibes, it’s got witches, it’s got history; I’m sold. Weyward just ticks all the boxes for me. Expect a review of this one soon!
1. Finally, in our top spot, we have A Mystery of Mysteries: The Death and Life of Edgar Allan Poe by Mark Dawidziak. Me? reading nonfiction? Listen, it doesn’t happen too often, but it does happen. So of course I’m going to a read a biography about Our Lord and Savior Edgar Allan Poe. There is a 100% chance I’ll be reading a ton of Poe’s short stories after I finish this read.
Thus endeth our list! Thank you so much for joining me today. I hope you’ve found a great read to enjoy this Spooky Season. Perhaps you’ll read along with me.
With that, I must bid you all adieu. I shall see you all again next week with a new review. If you can’t wait that long then you can always check out my podcast Nothing to See Hear. I’ve done a lot of episodes to help get you in the Spooky Season mood. I have a whole episode on The Amityville Horror if that’s something you’d be interested in. I’ve also done two episodes about gay vampires. If neither of those things are your speed, my two friends and I also talk Scooby-Doo, Disney, and weirdos of history; you’ll find something you like, I promise.
Until next time, stay safe, wash your hands, and read some good books for me.
