Halloween Costumes for the Literary Lovers
Hello, Book Nerds! Welcome back to Reading Has Ruined My Life or welcome if you are new. As always, my name is Hannah and I am your captain on this journey into my bookcases.
Halloween is fast approaching. If you haven’t locked in your costume yet, now is the time. Which is why I’m offering you five literary themed costumes this week. I haven’t released a list of costume ideas in a few years. It’s high time I revive this RHRML tradition.
Now unto the list!
5. The world needs more chaos, which is why you should dress up as the Queen of Chaos herself, Amelia Bedelia. This is an easy thrifted costume as all you need is either a black top and skirt combo or a little black dress, a white button down shirt for underneath, and a cutesy white apron. Oh, you also need a hat decked out with flowers. Or you could go flower crown. Whichever strikes your fancy. Go out and sow chaos this Halloween.
4. Let’s continue with the children’s lit theme. Why not dress up as Goosebumps poster boy Slappy the Dummy? A simple yet effectively spooky costume of a black suit, red bow tie, and some eyeliner so you can draw the Ventriloquist dummy lines on your face. Like I said, a simple yet effective spooky costume for Halloween.
3. With Sunrise on the Reaping hitting theaters in November, why not go with a Hunger Games inspired costume this Halloween? Sure, you could be any character from the series, but I want to highlight Effie Trinket. Why Effie? Because you can basically do whatever you want as long as it’s outlandish and over the top. Recreate the Alexander McQueen butterfly dress Elizabeth Banks wears in Catching Fire. Or create your own masterpiece. The sky is the limit with Effie Trinket.
2. Wear a funky little mustache and goatee and go as Hercule Poirot this Halloween. This is another simple costume. A good suit, bowler hat, that great mustache I already mentioned, and maybe a fancy cane if you feel like it. The last part of the costume is optional cause I know some out there will not want to carry a cane around all night; especially if you’re going out partying. Note: I do not advise attempting to solve a murder if something happens at your Halloween party and you’re dressed as Pirot.
1. Finally, another costume stemming from children’s literature: The Girl with the Green Ribbon. "The Green Ribbon" haunts me to this day! Jenny, girl, I have many questions! And the best part about this costume, you only need a green ribbon. You can wear whatever you want. You can base your costume on the illustrations from this story, make it as close to the source material as possible. Or you can make your costume sexy. Or you can wear your normal clothes. Tons of possibilities for this one. You just need that green ribbon.
